Natural Systems, Peace and Justice
9, 10, 11, 12

Students watch a 14-minute film, "Among Giants," by Rainhouse Cinema, about an environmental activist who risks injury and incarceration to protect an ancient redwood grove in California. In this lesson, students discuss the film and participate in classroom dialogues, exploring themes such as courage, empathy toward nature, and environmental justice. They will analyze the effectiveness of digital media and the choices made by the activist. Reflective writing prompts are also offered for students to demonstrate their understanding of the story. Concepts of comprehending and analyzing multimedia, structure and content of the media, identify and discuss related environmental themes in class discussions.
