Why do we set aside land for national parks, biosphere reserves, and national reserves?
How do our parking lots and ground cover impact natural systems?
What can we do to better facilitate rainwater drainage and to prevent flooding?
Why are green cities important for society?
To become a green (or greener) city, what characteristics should our city address first? Explain.
Is it practical to work toward making a large, urban environment (i.e., a city) green? Explain.

This module includes the following lessons:

Lesson 1: Eco-101: Parks and Conservation: (Estimated time needed: Two 50-minute session)
In this lesson, students explore how national parks, biosphere reserves, and national reserves help us conservation our cultural and natural heritage. The lesson begins with students reviewing national parks, their specific characteristics, and the importance of preserving their natural and cultural heritage for future generations. After the presentation, students research a national park, create a poster display of the information, and present their work to the class.

Lesson 2: Eco-Activity: Parking Lots and Ground Cover: (Estimated time needed: 50 minutes)
In this lesson, students see how rapid and extensive development impacts the environment. They learn the difference between permeable and impermeable ground cover and how each affects water runoff. Students brainstorm the best ways to replace some of the impermeable ground cover in their neighborhood.

Lesson 3: Eco-101: Green Cities (Estimated time needed: Two 60-minute sessions)
In this lesson, students discover what it means for a city to be “green” and learn how green cities around the world are serving as models for sustainable human development. Students examine principles of green urbanization and look at outstanding examples of green cities around the world. With the goal of moving toward a more sustainable future, students then work in teams to envision how their city could become green (or greener), develop a plan based on that vision, and use their plan to create a model, sketches, or blueprints that show what their improved community could look like.
