We are struck that water, gas, and electric utility meters are already measuring students’ individual and collective natural resources footprint ­­ in their homes, schools, and neighborhood businesses. Through technology already in students’ homes, we are freeing them to be STEM Heroes: analysts, scientists, engineers, who leverage their own real-life data to make a real difference, right now.

STEMhero is a website and curriculum that empowers students to collect and analyze their electricity, natural gas, and water consumption. Through the program, students create a baseline of their home and/or school's consumption; then, they decide on and measure the impact of efficiency behaviors and technologies. The students' findings of which efficiency practices worked best are shared with family and the community.

We need more students to be ready for, and excited about, careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) -- especially those related to the natural resource challenges we hear about everyday. The so called “STEM Gap” is especially wide for students from underrepresented populations: females, students of color, and those from lower income homes. Young people want to learn skills and knowledge that is clearly relevant to their lives, helps out their families, and empowers them to take on the real environmental challenges that will define their future. Educators want curriculum that is aligned, engaging, and truly rigorous. For our team, as parents, teachers and conservationists, these are deep and personal values.

STEMhero is hands-on STEM skill & career readiness. It is Project-based exploration at school and at home centered on and motivated by student's own utility data. All students can participate: apartments & houses, all income levels, any municipality, smartphone and tablet ready -- but not required.

Schools implement the program because its flexible, cross-curricular, technical by nature, and an ideal unit-enhancement aligned with critical standards in:

  • Human Impacts (climate, water, energy)
  • Non-fiction literacy
  • Engineering design
  • Functions / statistics

In-person or virtual professional development training sessions are available. Participants come away with not only confidence to immediately incorporate STEMhero into their classroom, but also exposure to the design thinking principles behind the curriculum.
